The Bridge to Mental Health

“On Not Knowing What To Do” by J K Broodle is a different slant on the modern curse of distress and its outcome – stress.
The author is not a doctor or medical professional, but is a person who has had problems in life and the story is how these problems were overcome, and recovery achieved. After a poor childhood, there came a downward spiral into drugs and alcohol, but manages to get back into managed life and now helps others who have taken the same path.
This book is a different approach to the old problem of how to manage stress in our lives in a simple but highly effective way.
Public enemy number one is our imagination in the battle against depression and stress.
The book is well worth a look for anyone interested in coping with modern-day life and its inevitable problems that can get a bit too much at times!

This book can be a little deceptive at first glance since, although it has all of the minimalist styling of a medical pamphlet, it actually turns out to be a very different breed of self-help book. The first thing you’ll notice is the stark emergency red face with the words “The International Institute of Psychosomatic Medicine” printed at the top and on the back cover. But you’ll also notice underneath it, “a personal story of preventive therapy”. This is also echoed on the back cover. J.K. Broodle’s “On Not Knowing What to Do” actually turns out to be one of the first real hybrids of self-help and memoir.

This may sound a little strange since most self-help books contain elements of memoir in them. But this book doesn’t go with the hard sell that others do. Instead, it describes Broodle’s ascent into the Seehealth method which helps him cope with an incredible amount of distress which has overcome his life. Rather than trying to market a method, Broodle describes his experience in the terms of an outsider, often repeating phrases like “this is what I was told” and “here’s how the consultant helped me”. This method is actually effective in engaging the reader, since they aren’t automatically put on the defensive with a pitch.

Broodle was in a terrible place in his life when he came to the Seehealth method. He was living in an alley way, forgotten by his children, and on the verge of suicide.

But by learning of his inner Guardian, an inner-self with the power to be more resolute than our outer selves. The book makes very clear that this is not a religious outlook, but a metaphysical one. Essentially, the Seehealth method is a mode of positive thinking much in the vein of tuning into your inner being, and letting go of the stress of things.

Brian Magrath, a director of the IIPM says “These ideas are new, and they’re presented here in a form that takes a more stylised approach. This is probably one of the most important self-help books ever. It would make a good affordable Christmas present.”

Mr Magrath added, “On Not Know What to Do” ultimately succeeds as both a memoir and a self-help title, angled just right so that you can read it from either perspective, and still be intrigued by its thoughtful ideas, constant humour, and uplifting principles”.

The book is available at selected branches of Angus and Robertson  or via the IIPM website at www.iipm.org.au.
